If you’ve been following my Instagram feed (which you totally should), you’ve no doubt heard the news that my company has recently moved offices. Not only did we move offices, but we moved to the 12th floor, purchased all new furniture, we totally upgraded everything and built this space from scratch just for us. As a military brat, moving means one thing – a fresh start. Couple this with the fact the move was happening in prime back-to-school season, and it was like double the “fresh start” mode – I decided to completely redo my desk and work space decor.
My company has very few offices, we work in a very open, casual, bean bag-infested environment – so while I don’t actually have an office of my own, I do have a kick-ass corner with a window. I knew our new desk would be white with a dark wood stain desk top, so I decided to go with a white and gold theme throughout. I wanted things to look clean, and uncluttered (which I have a hard time as a rule). So, I started a Pinterest board and got to planning.
This might sound dumb, but I started with a mousepad and coaster set … and from there, everything snowballed nicely. I’m kind of anal about keeping water at my desk these days, and I have to have a coaster to keep all that condensation off my desk. I loved that you could by a matching set from this Etsy shop!.
The next thing I did was switch out all my current photo frames, signage, etc. with pieces that matched. All of these pieces/pretties then got put on top of a white desk riser to pull them off the main desk so they were a) organized and b) could be seen easier. I can also store actual work items under the riser if I wanted (what a concept!).
My new desk lamp is one of my favorite parts of this transition – I wanted a gold/bronze looking lamp, but everything I was finding online was either not my style, or really expensive. I found this old piano lamp on eBay, and won it for less than $25, shipped. It looks great, and while it doesn’t put out a ton of super bright light, since I’m right next to a window, I don’t need it. Also pictured here is my new desktop wallpaper (which is a PERFECT reminder for me), and this amazing print from Type A Calligraphy.
One of the things that was a hard work around for me going from a tall to short cube was losing a lot of wall space. Thankfully, I was able to make room for my “Nerd Wall” … a collection of signage pieces I’ve bought from various Etsy stores. The gold pencil/pen holder is from Target.
Other things I highly recommend? This cord hider/organizer from IKEA let me keep a power strip hidden on my desk (and continues the white/gold theme). This laptop stand is AWESOME – super sturdy and raises my Macbook Pro up just enough to keep my neck comfy. I also made the switch over to an Apple Magic Mouse and keyboard and LOVE working on them as well. All-in-all, I’m really pleased with the finished product! Now, if I can just keep it this clean going forward …
